Design Fiction: A Short Essay on Design, Science, Fact and Fiction

“an approach to design that speculates about new ideas through prototyping and storytelling.” (Bruce Sterling)

Design fiction is a design practice aiming at exploring and criticising possible futures[1][2] by creating speculative, and often provocative, scenarios narrated through designed artifacts. It is a way to facilitate and foster debates, as explained by futurist Scott Smith: "... design fiction as a communication and social object creates interactions and dialogues around futures that were missing before. It helps make it real enough for people that you can have a meaningful conversation with".[3]🔗 Design fiction - Wikipedia

细节

Design fiction is the practice of creating tangible and evocative prototypes from possible near futures to help discover and represent the consequences of decision making.

What Is Design Fiction?

Untitled

Design Fiction is making things that tell stories.  It’s like science-fiction in that the stories bring into focus certain matters-of-concern, such as how life is lived, questioning how technology is used and its implications, speculating bout the course of events; all of the unique abilities of science-fiction to incite imagination-filling conversations about alternative futures. It’s about reading P.K. Dick as a systems administrator, or Bruce Sterling as a software design manual. It’s meant to encourage truly undisciplined approaches to making and circulating culture by ignoring disciplines that have invested so much in erecting boundaries between pragmatics and imagination.

Design fiction
